Learning Strategies 

Visual Support - incorporate realia, manipulatives, illustrated word walls, labels for diagrams

Learning by Doing - provide hands-on exploration of material, show the meanings of new words with gestures 

Oral Language Development - structured, scaffold opportunities to add singles words to sentences frames; use technology to allow students to record their ideas 

Reading Support - preview text using pictures, read aloud with comprehension checks and visual support, use parallel texts where learners can read or listen to in their native language 

Writing Support - encourage learners to express themselves in writing using their native language or other developmentally appropriate ways:

• respond to tasks by drawing

• add labels or captions to words or phrases in English

• list words or phrases 

• offer a modeled example of the final produce of a task or assignment 

• model individual steps of a task or assignment 

• have student create their own personal vocabulary journal by having them collect words and phrases they have learned throughout the lessons
